Herniated Disc Treatment
- natural & conventional healing
The treatment for a herniated disc will depend on a consultation with your doctor and will depend on your own particular circumstances. There is no one conventional treatment protocol.
It will also depend on how long you've been experiencing symptoms and pain, and their severity.
Often initial treatment is based on rest, physical therapy and medication for the pain. For severe cases, epidural steroid injections may be administered.
Lower or Upper ? Lumbar or Thoracic ?
With a thoracic herniated disc pain can occur in the upper back, together with pain and numbness.
For a lumbar disk problem, most disc degeneration occurs at L4- L5 .
A cervical herniated disk usually occurs at C5 - C6 or C6-C7 levels. This can cause weakness in the upper arm or neck, shoulder & arm pain. If you're experiencing painful neck symptoms, request pain relief medication from your physician.
Natural healing treatments
Both osteopathy and chiropractic medicine can prove an effective natural treatment for a herniated disk.
Patience is required, as most problems will heal themselves within six to twelve weeks.
Herniated disc surgery
If regular treatment for 2- 3 months does not provide some measure of pain relief, then surgery may well be considered.
Surgery success varies depending on the exact procedure, but the latest figures show a high rate of success despite requiring a long period of recovery.
