How I Did the Twist on the dance floor after Having Sciatica for over Two Months
For two agonising months I suffered from sciatica which meant I limped in to work and suffered discomfort and pain during the day, and at night, in my lower back, hip and legs.
For the first time, we'd been invited to a military Ball - one of those occasions where all the women wear ball gowns and the men wear either DJ's (dinner jackets) or military uniform.
As well as a lovely dinner, there was to be dancing in the ballroom, and for the men, bumper cars and some fun rides outside. Of course, we were also to have photographs taken to immortalise the event for posterity!
Unfortunately, whilst this was my "dream" event, my back was putting the whole thing in jeopardy - I mean, what's elegant about someone in a beautiful evening dress hobbling along on her elegant sandals? Nope, not a lot, is the answer!
As it was such a special occasion, I found myself talking to work colleagues about my disappointment about being prevented from attending or enjoying this prestigious event. A few suggested a further visit to my doctor or G.P. who had, so far, only prescribed pain killers and muscle relaxant drugs.
However, one genius suggested I try an osteopath - a rather expensive option, but by this time I was getting desperate enough to try anything that sounded like it might work. So, I phoned up the receptionist and booked myself in for an appointment - just 48 hours before the BIG day!
All I was hoping for was that I'd be able to walk alright and without that increasingly painful limp.
At my appointment, the osteopath sorted out a number of problems which, it seems, had accumulated from years of abuse of my back and although I certainly wasn't skipping out of his surgery, the pain had definitely moved location, so something had happened!
Imagine my surprise, when just 48 hours later, my back was sufficiently well to not only enjoy the evening, free from pain, but to get up on the dance floor to do the "twist" to some of the liveliest rock 'n' roll music of the evening.
Since then I've been going back for regular check ups and have also been doing some exercises to strengthen my back, combined with regular walking, I now have far fewer back problems and am able to do far more than I did ten years ago!
