Causes of Upper Back & Shoulder Pain

Before being able to treat it and provide pain relief, it's important to discover what causes your upper back, neck and shoulder pain.

Do you sit for long hours at a computer screen?

Hunching over your office desk, shoulders round, fingers stretched out to the keyboard can cause aching muscles in between your shoulder blades.

If the tension is acute, it can sometimes be accompanied by a tension headache.  Some simple remedies/exercises during your coffee and lunch breaks can help reduce tension and discomfort.

Have you suffered an injury - in sports or in a car accident?  Whilst initially this may have caused swelling or tenderness in the affected areas, pain acroos the shoulders and upper areas should diminish over time.

If the discomfort continues, make an appointment with your doctor or alternative therapist.

Whilst your doctor may be able to treat the symptoms or offer physiotherapy, an osteopath or chiropractor can often get to the root of the problem with simple massage and manipulation.

When you visit the doctor, osteopath or chiropracter, be ready to describe your symptoms accurately - is the discomfort mainly on the left or the right of your body?  Is it sharp or a dull ache?  Is it worse when waking up or later on in the day?  Are there any other symptoms?  This will help them to determine the cause and hence offer an appropriate treatment or cure.
